So Lets Start With a Few Loom Stitches
Getting Started!
For various reasons, most people start with the round looms, so this is where we will begin. In the basic pack, there are four looms. As with regular knitting needles, you can accomplish a variety of stitches and textures with any of them, and the size you choose to use will depend on the project you have in mind. The most popular beginner project is an adult/youth size hat, so let’s get you started!
As with every new project on the loom, your first step will be to anchor your working yarn. There are several ways to do this. I will show you my two favorites:
The Single Hitch
1. To do this, you will hold the yarn between the thumb and first finger and twist to form a loop (tail will be to back of loop and should be 6’ to 8’ long).
2. Place the loop on the single peg to the side of the loom and pull tight. If this is not tight enough to hold yarn in place, you can use the tail and form another hitch and place it on top of the first one.
The Slip Knot
1. You will again make a loop by twisting the yarn between your thumb and first finger (remember to leave a long tail).
2. Holding the loop in your left hand, place the working yarn (the yarn still attached to the ball) behind the loop and pull up through the center.
3. Place this loop on the first peg of the loom (this will be the peg to the right of the side peg) and tighten.
Other Basic Stitches
One over One:
Wrap your loom twice and knit off as in above project, taking bottom loop over top loop and off peg.
One over Two:
Wrap your loom with single strand of yarn three times and knit off by taking the bottom loop over the top two loops and off the peg. You will have two loops on the peg. Wrap loom once and again take the bottom loop over the top two and off the peg. Continue to desired length.
Two over Two:
Wrap loom with single strand of yarn four times and knit off by taking the two bottom loops over the top two loops and off the peg. Wrap loom twice and again take two bottom loops over top two and off the peg. Continue same pattern until you reach desired length.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Remember to keep your yarn loose! It will be difficult to move the loops off the peg if you wind it too tightly.
