We are going to be using a basic e-wrap stitch for this project. Because we are making a hat, you will want to use two strands of yarn, using them as one, for the entire project. With the second largest loom (for adults/youth, third loom for toddlers), hold loom in left hand, up on it’s side with the pegs facing to your right.
1. Assuming you used the Single Hitch method to anchor your yarn, we will begin by taking the yarn in our right hand and pulling it gently to the left side of the very first peg to the right of the anchor peg.
2. Keeping the yarn fairly loose, wrap the yarn completely around the first peg, ending in the back of the first peg. Repeat with second peg by coming from behind the peg on the right side and wrapping around. Continue with all other pegs until you reach the last one.
3. Anchor your working yarn (make another hitch) so your loops don’t slip. Push all loops down on pegs.
4. Remove the working yarn from the anchor peg (be careful not to remove the original anchor just yet as it will cause your project to unravel before you get started good!) and begin wrapping all the pegs again, beginning with the first one to the right of the anchor peg until you again reach the last one.
5. Anchor your working yarn on the side peg.
6. We are now ready to knit our first row, referred to in most patterns as “knitting off”. With our hook, we will take the bottom loop from the first peg (with double strands you will have two loops) and gently lift it over the top loop and completely over the peg so that there is only one (two) loop left. Continue this until you have gone completely around the loom and have only one (two) loop left on every peg.
7. Push the loops down on each peg.
8. Remove the working yarn from the anchor peg and repeat steps 4 - 7 until your project measures your desired length. (After you have knit off 6 or so rows, release your original anchor yarn. Your project is safe now!) General rule of thumb, for a small hat, you should have 6 1/2-7 1/2” , medium about 7-8” and large about 8-9”.
9. We are now ready to “bind off” or remove your hat from the loom. Anchor off your working yarn and cut yarn leaving about a 6” inch tail.
10. Cut a piece of yarn about 20 - 24” long. Thread the needle that came with your set. You are now going to “sew” the loops off of your loom. Take the needle under the loop on the first peg and sew through to the top, pulling the loop off the peg as you finish(Be sure to leave a 4 -5” tail to tie off with). Continue all the way around your loom until all the loops have been moved from the loom to your yarn.
11. Tuck the yarn you have anchored to the inside of your hat and then pull the two ends of your yarn together, “called the gather stitch”, and tie securely. Turn hat inside out and take original yarn and tie it securely with your gather yarn. Trim excess yarn.
